The Road Development Agency (RDA) has called for close collaboration with the Zambia Railways Limited in order to transform Zambia into a regional transport hub of the road and rail sector.

RDA Director and Chief Executive Officer Eng. George Manyele says the two organizations should create a network platform that will help promoting linkages between rail and road transport.

Eng. Manyele was speaking when he paid a courtesy call on ZRL Chief Executive Officer Christopher Musonda in Kabwe.

And Eng. Manyele has called on ZRL to operationalize the 2018 Statutory Instrument (SI) that compels 30 % of heavy cargo to be moved by rail.

He said RDA was concerned with overloading of motor vehicles on the roads as this contributes to quicker deterioration of the roads.

"In 2018 a Statutory Instrument was signed called the Railways Transportation of heavy Goods to compel 30% of bulky and heavy cargo to be transported by rail. As RDA we would like to know the status of the full implementation or operationalization of the SI because we are an interested stakeholder on the matter," Eng. Manyele said.
And Mr. Musonda said he was optimistic that the two organizations would enjoy a sound working relationship.

He said the courtesy call by the RDA CEO signifies the beginning of a long-lasting collaboration that will see the two institutions achieve a lot.

Mr. Musonda added that already ZRL and RDA have worked closely in the construction of the Kazungula Bridge which has a component of Rail.

He said ZRL is determined to connect the rail from Kazungula to Livingstone.
